Highlights
The slow flowing, pleasantly warm water of the Jordan river is the ideal site to be baptised for those wanting to go through this committing ceremony in Israel, where Jesus spent his whole life and in the same river he got baptised in. The site can accommodate several groups at once and there will usually be available space for the one wanting to make use of the facilities.
Background Information
According to the Gospels the Jordan River was the ultimate baptismal site for Jesus and his followers and this tradition has been practiced by Christians ever since. Many pilgrims have come to Israel especially to be baptised in the Jordan River through the ages and for many modern day visitors being immersed in its water is the highlight of their visit to the Holy Land. The Jordan river has its source in the Sea of Galilee and just in its beginning the Yardenit baptismal site is situated, before the water flows further down the river to eventually end up in the Dead Sea.
