Highlights on the Western Wall Tunnels
Upon entering the lowest parts of the tunnels the millennia old foundation stones of the Temple Mount are exposed with the largest one measuring more than 13 meters in length. The age and size of the stones can just make one wonder how the structure was built with ancient building methods, and what the Temple must have looked like. A visit in the tunnels is truly a travel in time and a highlight of any visit to Jerusalem.
Background Information on the Western Wall
What is now called the Western Wall Tunnels started out as an archaeological dig to uncover the foundations of the Western Wall visible above ground. The excavations were done after the Six Day War, lasted for 20 years, and uncovered the basic structures of the Second Temple built 2000 years ago at the spot where the Dome of the Rock is standing now. The visitor will visit the synagogue just inside the exit to the Western Wall Plaza, walk the length of the underground part of the Western Wall and will visit the Generation Centre exhibition of 3500 years of Jewish history, culminating in the establishment of the state of Israel.
