Highlights
Though not the largest of caves, this 82-metre long former quarry is an incredible site. The formations resemble everyday objects shuch as branches, coral, faces, and many are quite unusual but extraordinary. The caves make for a wonderful outing year round; in summer the caves are cool while in the winter they provide protection from the cold and rains.
Background
The cave formations are used by scientists to study climactic changes that have transpired in this region for thousands of years. Current instruments in use, however, do not allow for the exact dating of the formations.
Location
From central Israel, turn at the Sha'ar Haggai junction in the direction of Beit Shemesh (Route 38); from southern Israel, take Route 38 at Kiryat Gat; from Jerusalem take the Ein Karem-Bar Giora Road. The entrance to the reserve is on Route 3855 north of Beit Shemesh. There are signs directing visitors to the reserve
Tips
On Fridays, photography is permitted. There is an entrance fee to the caves and it includes a guide as well as an audio-visual presentation that is quite worthwhile.
