One of the most ancient Greek Orthodox monasateries in the Palestinian Territories, this monastery was built on the site where Jesus was baptised. it was founded by Saint Gerasimus around 455 and is located east of Jericho, on the road to Abu Bakr. The monastery has a guest house as well. Approximately three kilometres northeast of the manastery there is a Greek Orhodox Church and each year a pilgrimage takes place on January 19, commemorating the baptism of Christ by Saint John the Baptist.
The site is inside a closed military area that is open to the public only on this occasion and upon prior reservation only.
