Highlights
The absolute highlight of Nahal Amud is the experience of its stunning nature, so very hard to come by in this part of the world. Its very old and large trees covers the sky in many areas, and could only grow to such size due to the abundant water supply of the stream all year around. The trail requires only moderate physical fitness, and is really worth the effort. With a little attention to detail the visitor will notice a richness in plant life found in very few places in Israel.
Background Information
Nahal Amud winds its way down to the Sea of Galilee to the west of Safed, its shores dotted with mills along the way. This lush, green trail of primeval forest really stands out in the Israeli flora, and easily reminds the visitor of a forgotten piece of Paradise hidden in this narrow valley. During the 16. Century Nahal Amud was the base of the mill industry of Safed, until most of the workers were deported to Cyprus by the Ottomans. Now the area is a protected Nature Reserve with well marked trails along the stream and waterfalls, for the visitor to enjoy.
