Background on Migdala
Migdala was a farming village back in the time of Jesus. It is also known as the birthplace of Mary Magdalene.
The ancient Roman village are enclosed within a wall. It was the only established village along the Sea of Galilee and was the administrative center of the region up until 19 CE, when Tiberias was founded. The archaeologists uncovered the remains of the village dating from the time of Jesus, and a Byzantine monastery. A mosaic floor featuring a fisherman's boat was found at the place. This ancient church is controlled by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land and masses can be arranged.
In addition, recent discoveries revealed that there archaeological remains at the site dating back to the Second Temple period. Remains of an ancient synagagogue, containing a stone with a carving of a seven branch menorah is also found there.
Now a beautiful village laying below the nearby Arbel cliffs (Horns of Hitton), Migdala is a quiet neighborhood overlooking the shores of the Sea.
