History of the Akkotel
The Ottoman structure was built in the second half of the 18th century to accommodate soldiers and to serve as a check-point. . After World War I, during the British mandate, it became a regional school for boys. It then served as a courthouse until 1995. Renovations on the building began in 2000, and the boutique hotel opened to the public in September 2007. Akkotel is owned by Greek Catholic brothers who were intimately involved in the restoration and made to retain the original charm including the stone arches. There are 16 rooms, and the cost of a hotel room (including breakfast), based on double occupancy is $145 -$260 depending on the time of year. Rooms, including the rooftop café, are wheelchair accessible.
