Description

Travelujah and the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem invite you to join us on September 14th for an exploration of the unique Jerusalem traditions surrounding the Yamim Norai'im, "The Days of Awe” leading up to Yom Kippur.

The Talmud teaches that "Tshuva" (repentance) was one the seven things created by God before He created the world. In ancient times, the Temple in Jerusalem was the locus of the yearly ritual of national and individual repentance, which would crescendo on the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur. On this Day, God's forgiveness was attained when the High Priest would enter the Holy of Holies – Kodesh HaKodashim – to offer an atoning sacrifice on behalf of Israel (Leviticus 16:1-5).

The first declaration the High Priest uttered in the Temple on Yom Kippur, was "Ana” – I have sinned. This was followed by the rest of the nation of Israel acknowledging their sins and repenting. This day is celebrated because it provides assurance that restoration with God is possible providing freedom from sin, and hope for a positive future.

Today the Jewish people still consider Yom Kippur the holiest day of the year on the Jewish calendar and Jerusalem the holiest city. And for ten days beginning with Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and culminating with Yom Kippur, the Jewish people reflect on their lives, repent of past wrongs and prepare themselves for God’s judgment on what the coming year will bring.
