Getting around Jerusalem during the Papal Visit

 On Monday through Friday, 17-21 Iyar (May 11-15, 2009), Pope Benedict XVI will be visiting Jerusalem. The widespread security measures that must be implemented will affect the daily routine and mobility in the city.

 

Visit Itinerary: Mon., May 11: Arrival, landing pad at Mount Scopus, Presidential Residence, Yad Vashem, Notre Dame Hotel.

 

Tues., May 12: Visit to the Old City, Hechal Shlomo, Mass at the Gethsemane Church. Weds., May 13: Visit to Bethlehem. Thurs., May 14: Visit to northern Israel, Mass on the Mt. of Precipice. Fri., May 15: Visit to the Old City, end of trip. Mon., 17 Iyar (May 11, 2009) – Landing pad on Mount Scopus, Jerusalem sites Parking will be banned and vehicles towed: Mount Scopus landing pad, Haim Yasky, Aharon Katzir, University Blvd., Yitzhak Hanadiv, Martin Buber, Shmuel Ben Adiya, Rockerfeller, Derech Jericho, Derech Ha’ofal, Ma’aleh Hashalom, Kalbia, Yitzhak Kariv, Agron, Paris Square, Azza, Arlozorov, Hanassi, Herzog, Nayot, Bezek, Bait, Herzl Blvd. Hazikaron St. (Yad Vashem), Hameches Square, Shlomo Hamelech, Tzahal Square, Notre Dame, Hatzanchanim, Hativat Yerushalayim. The streets leading to the Presidential Residence, Yad Vashem, and the Notre Dame Hotel will all be closed to traffic. Van Leer Institute – Closed to the public starting 2:00 p.m. Tues., 18 Iyar (May 12, 2009) – Visit to Old City, Mass at Gethsemane Church Parking will be banned and vehicles towed: Ambassador’s Residence, Ben Adiya, Derech Jericho, Lion’s Gate, Derech Haofel, Dung Gate, Western Wall Plaza, Ma’aleh Hashalom, Hakalbiya, Hativat Yerushalayim, Yitzhak Kariv, Agron, Paris Square, Hamelech George, Shulchan David, Jaffa Gate, Latin Patriarch, Hameches Square, Tzahal Square, Sultan Suleiman, Gat Shmanim. Traffic axes that will be closed The following streets and those leading to them will alternately be closed to traffic for a few hours: Ma’aleh Hashalom, Haofel, Derech Jericho, Sultan Suleiman, Ben-Adiya, Wadi Joz, Buber, Batei Machseh, City of David, Yitzhak Kariv, Shlomo Hamelech, Yanai, Koresh, Hatzanchanim, Agron, Ramban, Azza, David Hamelech, Hativat Jerusalem, Tzir Hamusica, Mukdasi. Sites that will be closed: Jaffa Gate – Closed to visitors between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Entrance to the Old City will only be through the new gate. Mass at Gethsemane – from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. 1) Entrance only for invitees, and upon presentation of invitation and I.D. 2) Arrival on foot will be allowed only between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. 3) Starting at 1:00 p.m. the access routes will be closed, also for people on foot, and arrival will be possible in the following ways: * Reaching Herod’s Gate Square by foot; organized transportation from there to the Mass site starting from 11:00 a.m. * Organized rides to the Mass will be departing from Ammunition Hill starting at 11:00 a.m. * Following the Mass, transportation will be provided back to Ammunition Hill. 4) Entrance to the event will not be possible after 3:15 p.m. Weds., 19 Iyar (May 13, 2009) – Visit to the Bethlehem Parking will be banned and vehicles towed: Ben Adiya, Rockerfeller, Derech Jericho, Ma’aleh Hashalom, Kalbiya, Hativat Yerushalayim, Derech Hebron, Rachel’s Crossing. Traffic axes that will be closed The following streets and those leading to them will alternately be closed to traffic in the morning from 6:00-9:00 a.m. and in the evening from 4:00-8:00 p.m.: Hativat Jerusalem, Tzir Hamusika, Ma’aleh Hashalom, Ma’alot Ir David, Haofel, Batei Machseh, Derech Hebron, Asher Weiner, Hamefaked, Ein Rogel, Aminadav, Miriam Hahashmonait, Neumi, Albek, Yanovsky, Esther Hamalka, Yehuda, Ein Gedi, Rivka, Dostrovsky, Hatnufa, Ha’oman, Beit Lechem, Shmuel Meir, Rosmarin. Thurs., 20 Iyar (May 14, 2009) – Visit to the north Parking will be banned and vehicles towed: Ambassador’s Residence, Ben Adiya, Sayeret Har Hatzofim, Binyamin MAzzar, Churchill Blvd., Mount Scopus landing pad. The following streets and those leading to them will alternately be closed to traffic for a few hours: Ben Adiya, Buber, Yitzhak Hanadiv, Mazar, Sayeret Har Hatzofim, Katzir, Churchill, Tzir Ofrit. Fri., 21 Iyar (May 15, 2009) – Visit to the Old City, end of trip Parking will be banned and vehicles towed: Ben Adiya, Rockerfeller, Haofel, Ma’aleh Hashalom, Kalbiya, Hativat Yerushalayim, Jaffa Gate, Armenian Patriarch, Batei Machseh, Yitzhak Kariv, Tzahal Square, Hayil Handasa, Haim Bar Lev, Matar, University Blvd., Yitzhak Hanadiv Ramp, Martin Buber, Aharon Katzir, Churchill. The following streets and those leading to them will alternately be closed to traffic in the morning from 6:00-9:00 a.m. and in the evening from 5:30-8:00 p.m.: Tzahal Tunnel, Yitzhak Kariv, Hativat Yerushalayim, Tzir Hamusika, Ma’aleh Hashalom, Haofel, Batei Machseh, Derech Jericho, Ben Adiya, Buber, Mudaksi, Wadi Joz, Sultan Suleiman, Jaffa Gate, Hatzanchanim, Hayil Handasa, Hanevi’im, Neumi Kis, Haim Bar Lev, Van Pasan, Zaks, Shimon Hatzadik, Kalermon Geno, University Blvd., Aharon Katzir, Sayeret Har Hatzofim, Yitzhak Hanadiv, Derech Ma’aleh Adumim, Har Hazeitim, Churchill, Lechi. Sites that will be closed: Jaffa Gate – Closed to visitors between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Entrance to the Old City will only be through the new gate. · Check the media for updates on traffic arrangements and the times that streets will be closed. · Instructions regarding disruptions in the educational system in areas affected by the visit will be distributed to the relevant parties.
